Abstract
Introduction
Due to the high risk of contamination, the practice of bottle feeding with a nipple is
discouraged by the governments around the world. This study aims to examine the prevalence and
factors associated with bottle feeding among children aged 0–23 months in Indonesia.
Methods
Data from the 2017 Demographic Health Survey (DHS) of Indonesia were used with a cross-sectional
study design. The research included last-born children aged 0–23 months using a sample of 6,763
mother–baby pairs. The independent variables included marital status, mother’s education and
occupation, wealth quintile, place of residence, type of delivery, sex of child, and child’s age.
The dependent variable in this study was using bottle feeding. Chi-square tests and binary
logistic regression were used to examine the association between bottle feeding and related
factors.
Results
The prevalence of bottle feeding in Indonesia was 37.9%. Multivariate analysis showed that
mothers with a higher education level (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] 4.9, 95% Confidence Interval
[CI] 2.3–10.3), working mothers (AOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.4–1.8), richest family (AOR 1.8, 95% CI
1.5–2.3), urban living (AOR 1.5, 95% CI 1.3–1.8), caesarean delivery (AOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.3–1.8),
female child (AOR 0.8, 95% CI 0.7–0.9) and children aged 6–23 (AOR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2–1.6) were
significantly associated with the use of bottle feeding relative to their counterparts.
Conclusion
The increased risks of using bottle feeding have been significantly associated with maternal
and child factors as well as the wealth index and urban residence. Continued support of
discouragement of bottle feeding policy needs to be enhanced by considering significant
variables in this study.
Abstract
Children are characterized as healthy when they grow and develop adequately. This is determined through age-appropriate ideal height and weight measurements. This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of stunting among 10-year old children. This observational study had a cross-sectional design. This descriptive research was conducted from October to November 2019 using a total sample of 392 children obtained through the multistage proportional sampling to select participants from the student in 19 first elementary school in the study area. The anthropometric measurements of height were taken using a microtoice. The measurement results were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) AntroPlus 2007 standards for 10-year old children. Height was measured using standard methods and height for age and the z-score was computed to assess stunting. The hypothesis test was done using ANOVA. The prevalence of stunting among 10-year old children in central Sulawesi, Indonesia is 24.7%. Poso's district has the highest percentage at around 35.9%, Donggala district is around 35.7%, Sigi district is around 16.5% and Palu City is around 12.5%. The highest mean for height was found in Palu City at 135,7 cm and the lowest was in Donggala district at 129,9cm. ANOVA showed a significant value of < 0.001 with z-scores of -0.72, -1.63, -1.45 and -1.09 in Palu City, Donggala District, Poso and Sigi respectively. The prevalence of stunting in Central Sulawesi for children aged 10 years old is 24.7%. Donggala and Poso district have the highest prevalence of stunting. Some strategies need to be executed in order to improve the level of nutrition of elementary school children. This can be done by providing safe and hygienic school canteens, promoting healthy food diversity, encouraging more fish consumption and other healthy protein ingredients.
Abstract
Background
Nutrition specific reflects most of the evidence of programmatic successes, such as improving
breastfeeding. Specific intervention is an action or activity that is specifically directed at
the first 1000 days of life. In general, these activities are carried out by the health sector.
Aim
Study aims to analyze specific interventions for preventing stunting in children under 2 years
of age in post-natural disaster areas.
Methods
This type of quantitative analytic research with a cross-sectional design conducted in Palu City
central of Sulawesi Indonesia from October until November 2020. The population in this study
were mothers and children under 2 years. Sampling using consecutive sampling technique with a
total of 384 samples. Data analysis using a frequency distribution, height Z score table
according to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.
Result
The prevalence of stunting in children under 2 years of age in Palu was 37.24%. The only specific
intervention behavior in preventing stunting that was statistically significant was breastfeeding
for up to 2 years (p = 0.025).
Conclusions
Specific interventions to prevent stunting in children under 2 years after natural disasters are
breastfeeding children up to 2 years. The prevalence of stunting in children under 2 is 37.24%.
To reduce stunting problems in the city of Palu Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, mothers need to be
informed about the risks and assistance from local and central government.
Abstract
Background
Counseling is an important part of successful infant and young child feeding (IYCF). Optimal IYCF is a key area for improving child survival and promoting healthy growth and development.
Aim
The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics and to provide an overview of the input, process, and output components of IYCF counseling in the Central Sulawesi stunting area.
Materials and Methods
This type of research is a semi-quantitative study which describes the knowledge and abilities of counselors. The population in this study were nutrition officers, midwives, and cadres who had received IYCF training and had followed the orientation of the IYCF module for at least 30 h in stunting focus locations. The sample in the study was counselors who received training in three subdistricts of Central of Sulawesi.
Result
The informants were 14 IYCF counselors. All respondents were female, aged 22–48 years. The method of counseling is by the counselor visiting pregnant women/mothers of toddlers/caregivers directly and face to face. In general, inadequate counseling room facilities are the barrier faced by counselors. Training was only limited to orientation and there was no post-training monitoring. The activities carried out by the counselor are in the range of 70–86%. Benefit of giving counseling for IYCF is that mothers will know nutritional status of their children. IYCF increases knowledge about breastfeeding better than milk formulas, the right type and age of feeding. The training has referred to the module referring to the WHO/UNICEF module which is presented in 37 h of field lessons.
Conclusions
Counseling is an important part of successful IYCF. The method of counseling is by the counselor visiting pregnant women/mothers of toddlers/caregivers directly and face to face. Benefit of giving counseling for IYCF is that mothers will know nutritional status of their children.
Abstract
Background
Reducing and preventing stunting is currently a priority for health programs in Indonesia. As providers of midwifery care, midwives have a strategic position to play a role in accelerating stunting reduction. The provision of continuity of midwifery care is expected to be able to prevent stunting in infants.
Aim
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of providing continuity of midwifery care for the incidence of stunting.
Methods
The study design was a cohort from the third trimester of gestation until the baby reached 6 months of age, with the population were all third-trimester pregnant women in the working area of Mapane Health Center. The number of samples was 32 as case and 32 as control. The research variables were the characteristics of the respondents, early initiation of breastfeeding, chronic energy deficiency, hypertension, place of birth, and the incidence of stunting. The hypothesis test was used as Chi-square. Data analysis used the WHO Anthro and STATA applications.
Result
The proportion of children who were stunted at the age of 6 months was 15.6%, where the proportion of children who experienced stunting at 6 months of age in the control group was 28.1%, while in the intervention group it was only 3.1%. Providing effective midwifery care to prevent stunting in children showed that maternal age (p = 0.017) and exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.009) were associated with the incidence of stunting.
Conclusions
Exclusive breastfeeding can prevent the occurrence of stunting in children.
Abstract
Background
Stunting is caused by multi-dimensional factors and the most decisive intervention should be carried out in the first 1,000 days of life. Poor parenting practices, lack of knowledge about health and nutrition before and during pregnancy are some of the contributing factors and 60% of children aged 0-6 months do not receive exclusive breastfeeding.
Aim
To assess the role of midwives and the Indonesian Midwives Association Professional Organization in reducing the risk of stunting in Indonesia.
Methods
This type of descriptive research uses an exploratory study approach by assessing the role of midwives and the professional organization of the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) in reducing the risk of stunting in Central Sulawesi. The data of 288 midwives were collected using google form from 22 July 2020 to 22 August 2020. Data were analyzed by SPSS.
Result
In general, midwives have provided maternal and child health books to pregnant women, recorded complete maternal and child health records, conducted antenatal care for pregnant women, provided nutritional food counseling for pregnant women, gave Fe 90 tablets to pregnant women, provided calcium tablets to pregnant women, conducting classes for pregnant women, delaying umbilical cord cutting (>30 minutes), providing vitamin A to postpartum mothers, conducting exclusive breastfeeding counseling, providing family planning services, providing IYCF counseling. However, for the activities of Implementing a special stunting prevention program, implementing postnatal care and initiating early breastfeeding still need improvement.
Conclusions
The role of midwives in efforts to prevent stunting in Indonesia with midwives have provided maternal and child health books to pregnant women. Delaying umbilical cord cutting to 30 minutes, giving vitamin A to postpartum mothers, breastfeeding counseling, providing family planning services, providing IYCF counseling.
